Hasbro Commits to Digital Gaming with Ambitious Expansion Plans
During Hasbro's Q2 earnings call, CEO Chris Cocks emphasized the company's strategic shift towards digital play, allocating $125 million for video game development and aiming to launch one to two new titles per year starting from late 2025 or early 2026. The recent appointment of John Hight as president of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming, along with the addition of experienced video game executives to the company's board, underscores this commitment. Cocks highlighted the objective of expanding and digitizing Hasbro's mid-core and hard-core brands, with approximately half of the company's $250 million annual capital envelope dedicated to digital games. He noted that Hasbro has 150 projects in development or already released, and with key hires like Ames Kirshen and James Ohlen, the company is fully invested in becoming a digital play company. The Wizards of the Coast & Digital Gaming segment saw a 20% year-on-year revenue increase, driven in part by the success of Scopely's Monopoly Go, which has grossed over $3 billion, and the continued popularity of Baldur's Gate 3. Cocks attributed the segment's growth to the company's early adoption of digital strategies, having spent hundreds of millions of dollars on studio development and brand expansion through digital partnerships.
