SAG-AFTRA Announces Video Game Strike Set to Begin Tomorrow

The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has initiated a strike, commencing at 12:01 am tomorrow, July 26. This move comes after the SAG-AFTRA National Board granted its chief negotiator the authority to call an immediate strike in a bid to protect voice actors fighting for job security amidst the increasing use of generative AI by studios. National executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland stated that the strike follows over a year and a half of unsuccessful negotiations regarding the Interactive Media Agreement. The group of studios involved in the negotiations includes major names such as Activision, Disney, Electronic Arts, and WB Games. SAG-AFTRA aimed to secure critical AI protections by requiring any game employing SAG-AFTRA talent to adhere to specific agreements. However, the organization claims that despite agreements on several key issues, the employers have refused to provide clear and enforceable language regarding the protection of performers in AI language. Crabtree-Ireland emphasized that the video game industry's success is driven by its creative workforce, including SAG-AFTRA members who deserve fair compensation and informed consent for the AI use of their work. He expressed disappointment that the studios have not learned from past lessons, highlighting the union's determination to demand fair treatment. In response, a spokesperson for the video game producers stated that they are disappointed by the union's decision to strike, given the progress made in negotiations, including historic wage increases and additional safety provisions.
