Genshin Impact Voice Actors Criticize MiHoYo's Alleged Cultural Misrepresentation

Voice actors from Genshin Impact have spoken out against the game's developer, MiHoYo, citing concerns over the handling of cultural elements and representation in the upcoming region of Natlan. Although Natlan draws inspiration from Africa, Latin America, and Australasia, its character designs have been criticized for not accurately reflecting the diversity of these cultures. Albedo's voice actor, Khoi Dao, emphasized the importance of proper representation, stating that if a game heavily borrows from real-world cultures, it should strive to do so respectfully and authentically. Anne Yatco, the voice of Raiden Shogun, echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the game's developers will listen to fan feedback regarding cultural sensitivity. Valeria Rodríguez, who voices Sucrose, also weighed in, urging MiHoYo to conduct thorough research and demonstrate cultural appreciation when drawing from real-world cultures. Rodríguez specifically pointed to the depiction of the Yoruba deity Olorun, which she felt was 'whitewashed' in Genshin Impact, comparing it unfavorably to the representation of the same deity in the game Smite. As of now, MiHoYo has not publicly addressed the controversy.
