Sweden Celebrates Gaming Heritage with Notable Titles

The Swedish video game industry's trade association, Dataspelsbranschen, has unveiled its Game Culture Canon, a curated list of 15 games that have profoundly impacted Swedish culture. These titles were chosen by a panel of industry experts, historians, and academics from hundreds of nominations submitted by the public. The Game Culture Canon is part of a broader effort by Sweden's Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, to establish an official cultural canon for the nation. The selected games include iconic titles such as Minecraft, Candy Crush, and Goat Simulator, as well as The Battle of Polytopia and It Takes Two. In a statement, Dataspelsbranschen's spokesperson, Per Strömbäck, emphasized the importance of recognizing games as a legitimate form of culture, citing their ability to evoke emotions, spark creativity, and reflect the world we live in. The full list of games included in the Game Culture Canon is as follows: Amnesia – The Dark Descent, BackPacker, Battlefield 1942, The Battle of Polytopia, Budget Cuts, Candy Crush Saga, Europa Universalis, It Takes Two, Goat Simulator, Ground Control, Minecraft, Sayonara Wildhearts, Star Stable Online, Stugan, and Toca Tea Party.
