UK Games Industry Confronts 17.1% Gender Pay Gap, According to Brightmine

A significant disparity in average basic salaries exists within the UK games industry, with men earning over £8,000 more than women. This finding is based on data from Brightmine, a leading provider of salary benchmarking services for the video games sector, which analyzed information from more than 25 games businesses and over 3,000 employees. The average male basic salary stands at £49,695, while the average female basic salary is £41,174, resulting in a pay gap of 17.1%. Although this figure is higher than the 14.7% average across all industries, it is lower than the 25.8% gap observed in the technology industry. The current Brightmine salary benchmarking project for 2024 is now open for participation from UK games companies, in partnership with GamesIndustry.biz. Last year's data revealed that women are predominantly represented in studio support, general management, and information and advice roles, whereas men dominate games art, marketing, and games QA positions. Brightmine, formerly known as XpertHR, is a well-established benchmarking service that has expanded into the gaming industry. The project aims to facilitate fair compensation and talent retention among participating companies. The 2024 program will run until the end of July, and all data submitted will be kept confidential and anonymized. Participation is free, with all contributors receiving a basic report, and more advanced reporting and database access available for a fee.
