Toronto Ubisoft Studio Hit by Job Cuts
Following a restructuring effort, Ubisoft's Toronto studio has undergone a round of layoffs, resulting in the loss of 33 positions. According to reports from PC Gamer, the studio implemented a 'targeted realignment' of its workforce, leading to redundancies aimed at ensuring the successful delivery of its future plans. In a statement, Ubisoft expressed its commitment to supporting affected employees through this transition, offering severance packages and career guidance. The layoffs are not expected to impact ongoing projects, such as the remakes of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Splinter Cell. This marks the second instance of layoffs at a Toronto-based game development studio this month, after Gameloft also reduced its workforce due to current market conditions. Earlier in the year, Ubisoft had laid off 45 staff members across its global publishing and Asia-Pacific divisions as part of a broader reorganization. Despite these challenges, Ubisoft reported a 27% increase in sales to €2.3 billion ($2.5 billion) in its 2023 fiscal year, driven by the strong performance of its Rainbow Siege and Assassin's Creed franchises.
