Thunderful Group Offloads Distribution Businesses to Bergsala NDP

As part of its ongoing restructuring efforts, Thunderful Group has sold its distribution businesses to a newly-established subsidiary of Bergsala, marking a significant step towards becoming a dedicated gaming company. The acquisition, made by Bergsala NDP AB, includes Amo Toys, Bergsala Aktiebolag, Thunderful 1, and Thunderful Solutions. This move was first announced to shareholders on May 21 and has been completed as of today. Bergsala NDP AB is owned by Owe Bergsten, who is not only the largest shareholder but also a board member of Thunderful. Following this transaction, the remaining Thunderful entity will focus solely on its gaming operations, comprising development studios such as Coatsink, Jumpship, and Image & Form - the creator of SteamWorld, alongside publisher Rising Star Games and investment firm Robot Teddy. This development is part of the restructuring plan unveiled in January, which included a 20% workforce reduction. Previously, Thunderful had sold off its German-based developer and publisher, Headup, for €500,000, and another distribution business, Nordic Game Supply. The Thunderful Group was initially formed through the merger of Thunderful and Bergsala in December 2019. Bergsala is notably recognized as the exclusive distributor of Nintendo products in the Nordic and Baltic regions, with this partnership extended until March 31, 2026. The decline in sales of Switch hardware, as the console approaches the end of its lifecycle, was cited as a major factor contributing to Thunderful Group's significant full-year loss of SEK 609.4 million ($57 million), despite previous successes largely attributed to Bergsala's Nintendo revenues.
