Gameloft Toronto Experiences Significant Staff Reduction
Gameloft has officially confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the company underwent a restructuring process, deeming it necessary to reduce its workforce due to current market conditions. A spokesperson stated, 'As a company, we regularly assess our production capacity. Following careful consideration and in response to the changing market, we had to implement a reduction in our workforce.' This decision led to a substantial decrease in production activities at the Toronto studio, resulting in the termination of several employees. The company has expressed its understanding of the impact on affected staff and is committed to working with them individually to address their situations. Initially, it was reported that the majority of Gameloft Toronto's staff had been let go, with only HR, IT, and management positions remaining unaffected. The developer's title, Disney Magic Kingdoms, is expected to be transferred to Gameloft's Kharkiv, Ukraine studio, with all Toronto-based staff working on the title being laid off - approximately 49 people. A community manager, Tasha Huggins, also announced her departure from Gameloft Toronto on LinkedIn, praising the talent of her former colleagues and offering to provide recommendations. The other project that Gameloft Toronto was working on has been cancelled, following an initial round of layoffs in February, which was followed by a second round of redundancies in April, resulting in the loss of 40 more jobs. GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Gameloft for further comment.
