Dan Houser Explains Why a Grand Theft Auto Film Was Never a Viable Option

Dan Houser, the former head writer and co-founder of Rockstar Games, has expressed his reservations about adapting the company's iconic titles, such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, into feature films. In a recent interview, Houser noted that the financial risks associated with such projects 'never made sense' due to the lack of creative control and potential damage to the intellectual property. Instead, Houser has shifted his focus to Absurd Ventures, a new company aimed at developing innovative IPs through more accessible formats like audiobooks and graphic novels. The venture's inaugural project, A Better Paradise, is a 12-part audio series featuring notable actors, while subsequent projects include a crime graphic novel titled American Caper and a comedic venture. Houser envisions a future where these IPs can seamlessly transition between interactive and linear entertainment, with the ultimate goal of creating engaging content that stands on its own merit, rather than solely serving as a marketing tool.
