Challengers Games Studio Closes Its Doors
The Challengers Games studio has ceased operations, resulting in the unavailability of its latest game, Second Wave, as of the previous day. In a detailed statement on the company's website, CEO Koji Tamura revealed that the Seoul-based studio is grappling with debts amounting to ₩2.4 billion (approximately $1.7 million) and is currently the subject of an investigation by the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The company's financial accounts have been frozen, and employees have not received their salaries since March 2024, prompting Tamura to express his hope for a miraculous turnaround. These developments follow the studio's protracted struggles with securing funding and developing its titles, including Illang and Second Wave, the latter of which received a disappointing response upon its Early Access release last month. Tamura acknowledged that the financial constraints would prevent Second Wave from continuing beyond July, citing the inability to cover server costs. He apologized for the game's unsuccessful outcome and the delayed payment of wages, assuring that he would find a means to settle the overdue salaries. Although the studio's closure seems imminent, Tamura hinted at the possibility of a revival, stating that the company would restart and make announcements when ready. Meanwhile, Steam users who purchased Second Wave will receive refunds, and the game's Discord server will shut down in July.
