Bandai Namco Unveils Its Most Ambitious Expansion Launch with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Bandai Namco has revealed that the marketing efforts for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion are on a scale unlike any of its previous DLC releases, with the company's chief marketing and sales officer, Anthony Macare, stating that the campaign is 'unmatched in scope' and the publisher's most ambitious to date. Launching tomorrow, Shadow of the Erdtree introduces a new map, additional dungeons, bosses, and storyline extensions, along with various enhancements to the game's RPG elements. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Macare expressed the company's high expectations for the launch, referring to Shadow of the Erdtree as a 'landmark milestone' that surpasses the traditional boundaries of downloadable content. He emphasized that the expansion's scale is comparable to that of a standalone game, which has driven Bandai Namco's approach to its launch. As a result, the company has dedicated substantial resources to the marketing campaign, treating it with the same level of commitment as a brand-new title release. The launch will feature multiple physical and digital editions, including a premium collector's edition, aiming to make a significant impact at retail. Macare anticipates that the expansion's release will have a substantial effect on Elden Ring's sales, noting that the company has already seen an increase in active players leading up to the launch of Shadow of the Erdtree. He observed that the active player count has reached new heights, with both early adopters and new players contributing to the surge. Macare expressed gratitude for the audience's willingness to re-engage with the game's universe, crafted by FromSoftware. Addressing a recent report that less than half of Elden Ring's Steam players had completed the required boss to access Shadow of the Erdtree, Macare acknowledged the challenge but emphasized that even a fraction of the 25 million units sold constitutes a substantial audience. The company has tailored its marketing efforts to effectively engage this segment, believing that the expansion's release will motivate players to complete the necessary parts of the game and rise to the challenge.
