Navigating Uncertainty in the Gaming Industry
The recent BAFTA Games Mental Health Summit featured a panel discussion on navigating uncertainty and building resilience in the gaming industry, particularly in light of ongoing layoffs and studio closures. Hosted by psychologist Stuart Chaun, the panel included One Player Mission founder Kim Parker Adcock and sound designer Konstantin Semionov, who shared their personal experiences with layoffs from different perspectives. Parker Adcock, who now works outside of the gaming industry, and Semionov, who was affected by Frontier's redundancies, emphasized the importance of processing emotions and finding support during challenging times. According to Chaun, recognizing and acknowledging one's emotions is crucial in developing a more objective approach to dealing with uncertainty. Parker Adcock and Semionov highlighted the value of venting and discussing concerns with trusted colleagues, which can help individuals process their emotions and gain a fresh perspective. They also suggested setting up a safe space, such as a private channel, where team members can openly share their worries without fear of judgment. Semionov, who became an employee representative during the redundancy process, stressed the importance of asking informed questions and seeking clarification from management. He advised approaching these conversations in a non-confrontational manner to yield more constructive responses. Parker Adcock and Semionov agreed that support can come from various sources, including colleagues, friends, and family members, and that it's essential to find someone who can provide a listening ear and understanding. They also encouraged individuals to reach out to more senior colleagues, who may offer valuable guidance and support. Ultimately, the panel emphasized that resilience is about adapting to unpredictable situations and finding ways to respond positively. By taking stock of their experiences, acknowledging their emotions, and seeking support, individuals can build resilience and navigate uncertainty in the gaming industry.
