Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Takes Top Spot in Japan's Monthly Sales Rankings
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door claimed the top position in Japan's sales charts for May, with a notable 115,649 units sold within the initial three days following its May 23 launch. This figure closely rivals the performance of the original GameCube title, which debuted in 2004 with 138,000 copies sold, as per the latest data from Famitsu. However, it's worth noting that the remake's digital sales via the Nintendo eShop are not included in this count. Stellar Blade secured the second spot with 46,424 copies sold, trailed by newcomer Endless Ocean Luminous, which sold 42,847 copies after launching on May 2. The May charts were predominantly dominated by Nintendo titles, with Stellar Blade being the sole exception, not being released on the Switch. Other popular titles, such as Ring Fit Adventure and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, also made a comeback to the top 10 list, alongside fellow Nintendo titles like Super Mario Bros Wonder and Princess Peach: Showtime. As the leading publisher, Nintendo accounted for 48.5% of total sales, generating ¥2.6 billion ($16.5 million) in revenue, largely driven by the success of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Endless Ocean Luminous. The Switch remained the top-selling format, with 79.9% of sales attributed to it, totaling 769,886 boxed games sold, followed by the PS5 with 144,005 units, accounting for 15%. In terms of hardware, the Switch retained its top position, with its three models collectively selling 192,824 units. The Switch's sales for May reached an additional 193,000 units, bringing its lifetime sales to 32.9 million units. The PS5's two models sold a combined 89,207 units, with the disc drive version leading the sales.
