Valve Faces £656m Lawsuit Over Alleged Anti-Competitive Behavior

A £656 million collective lawsuit has been filed against Valve, alleging the company exploits its market dominance to overcharge approximately 14 million UK consumers who use its Steam platform. The lawsuit, submitted to the Competition Appeal Tribunal on June 5 by digital rights campaigner Vicki Shotbolt, asserts that Valve's practices are unfair and harm UK gamers. Shotbolt stated that the lawsuit aims to halt Valve's alleged misconduct and secure refunds for affected consumers. The claim also alleges that Valve compels publishers to adhere to restrictive pricing and imposes commission fees of up to 30%. According to the claim's website, Valve's actions have stifled competition in the PC gaming market, resulting in higher prices for UK customers. Shotbolt is being represented by Milberg London LLP, the same law firm that represented consumer rights expert Alex Neill in a similar lawsuit against Sony in 2022, in which Sony was accused of overcharging players, developers, and publishers.
