Supercell Advocates for Greater Mobile Game Representation at Summer Game Fest
According to Supercell, there is ample opportunity for mobile games to receive more attention at events like Summer Game Fest. The Finnish developer made history by being the sole company to feature a mobile-only game during this year's showcase, with a live-action trailer for Squad Busters that starred several notable celebrities. However, the studio's marketing head, Rob Lowe, notes that the event organizers were initially hesitant to include the game. Lowe recounts that the organizers were swayed by a video featuring actor and comedian Ken Jeong, dressed in a chicken costume from Supercell's Hay Day game, discussing Summer Game Fest. This unique approach, combined with the fact that mobile gaming accounts for roughly half of the global gaming market's revenue, underscores the importance of incorporating mobile-only games into the same discussions as console and PC titles. Lowe emphasizes that Supercell aims to elevate mobile gaming to the same level as console gaming, citing the company's approach to game development and marketing as being reminiscent of Nintendo's strategy in the console market. With Squad Busters, a multiplayer action game that brings together characters from Supercell's previous titles, already achieving significant success with over 30 million downloads and $1.1 million in revenue at launch, the company is poised to make a lasting impact on the gaming industry.
