UK Launches £2.3m Games Innovation Hub in Guildford

The University of Surrey has unveiled a state-of-the-art Games Innovation Zone in Guildford, backed by a £2.3 million initiative designed to drive growth in the region's gaming sector. This innovative hub comprises a collaborative workspace and a dedicated area for testing and gameplay, bringing together academics, local game developers, and esports professionals. The zone is part of the Games And Innovation Nexus (GAIN) programme, launched earlier this year with a commitment to invest £2.3 million in the development of the gaming industry beyond London. The programme focuses on three key objectives: fostering connections between university researchers and game companies, strengthening links between local industries in Guildford and Leamington, and investing in a new ecosystem that includes the Games Innovation Zone. Plans are also underway to expand the incubation centre at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. The GAIN programme is supported by Research England, Surrey County Council, the University of Surrey, UCA Farnham, Warwick University, and Warwickshire County Council. According to Caroline Fleming, director of the Surrey Innovation District, 'The launch of the Games Innovation Zone marks a significant leap forward for the next generation of gaming. This hub will not only facilitate academic collaboration, creativity, and gameplay but also help address the industry's most pressing challenges, solidifying Guildford's reputation as the UK's premier gaming hub.'
