Twitch Introduces New Features to Help Users Avoid Unwanted Content

Twitch has rolled out an update that enables users to personalize their experience by filtering out undesirable content. According to Eurogamer, this new feature expands on the Content Classification Labels introduced last year, which allowed streamers to categorize their content based on its inclusion of explicit material, such as sexualized content, substance abuse, and gambling. With these changes, users can choose to hide or blur streams that have been labeled with these tags, depending on their individual preferences. In a blog post announcing the update, Jeremy Forrester, Twitch's VP of community products, stated: "Our goal is to provide a more tailored experience for each user, allowing them to select the communities they wish to engage with and have more control over the content they encounter on the platform. We acknowledge that individual preferences vary, and we want to empower users to curate their own experience on Twitch." Forrester also stressed the importance of accurate labeling by streamers, warning that failure to do so may result in Twitch adding the necessary labels, which cannot be removed. These updates follow years of criticism regarding the type of content available on Twitch, with the platform frequently revising its guidelines on explicit material. In recent years, Twitch has faced challenges related to explicit content, including the popularity of streams featuring lingerie and hot tubs, which prompted the platform to add a new category to its tagging system in 2021. Additionally, some streamers used explicit images as green screens, sparking further controversy. Twitch has also faced issues related to gambling, leading to changes in its policies in 2022.
