London Studio Closes After Two Decades of Game Development
After more than 20 years of creating iconic gaming experiences, PlayStation's London Studio has ceased operations. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the studio reflected on its rich history and expressed gratitude to its supporters. "Over the past twenty years, our studio has been privileged to work with incredibly gifted individuals in the gaming industry," the statement read. "As we bid farewell and embark on new endeavors, we would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to our past and present players, colleagues, and friends who have stood by us throughout the years. It has been an unforgettable journey." Throughout its tenure, the London Studio has developed a range of notable titles, including The Getaway, Gangs of London, and SingStar Ultimate Party, as well as contributing to projects like Horizon: Forbidden West. The studio was also known for its innovative approach, having worked on pioneering technologies such as EyeToy, Wonderbook, and virtual reality experiences. In a 2022 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, co-studio head Stuart Whyte discussed the studio's shift in focus from VR to an untitled online co-op project. The closure of the London Studio comes on the heels of Sony Interactive Entertainment's announcement to reduce its global workforce by 900 employees.
