Study Reveals Gaming as a Primary Means of Self-Expression for Nearly Half of Players

According to a recent study, a significant 46% of gamers engage in video games as a means to express themselves creatively and tap into their imagination. The findings are part of Fandom's fifth annual 2024 Inside Gaming Report, released on Monday, which surveyed 5,000 global users. The report notes a 10% year-over-year increase in players using games as a form of self-expression. Character customization emerged as the most popular form of self-expression, chosen by 76% of respondents, followed by username selection at 48%, and in-game communication at 35%. The primary motivation for gaming was stress relief, cited by 54% of participants, while 40% played for achievement and rank, and 39% for social connection. Other motivations included escaping reality, seeking challenges, and exploring virtual worlds. Notably, players who feel gaming allows them to be their authentic selves are 30% more likely to spend time playing than in previous years. Titles like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite were identified as popular platforms for self-expression. The study also found that 64% of respondents felt more comfortable being themselves online, with 80% admitting their online persona differs from their real-life personality.
