Nintendo Expands Development Capabilities with Acquisition of Shiver Entertainment
Nintendo has announced its acquisition of US-based game developer Shiver Entertainment from Embracer Group. Shiver Entertainment is renowned for its work on porting games to the Nintendo Switch, with notable titles including Warner Bros' Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1. According to Nintendo, the acquisition aims to 'secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles', with Shiver Entertainment set to continue developing and porting games for multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, after the acquisition. This move is part of Nintendo's strategy to enhance its development capabilities, driven by the increasing complexity and duration of modern game development cycles. In recent years, Nintendo has made several strategic acquisitions, including SRD studio in 2022 and Next Level Games in 2021. The company is also investing in a new development center, slated for completion by 2028. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa emphasized the company's focus on building internal resources and nurturing relationships with existing development partners, while also exploring opportunities to secure necessary development resources through recruitment and potential acquisitions. Furukawa stated, 'We will continue to actively work to secure the necessary development resources to increase the long-term value of our IP and to constantly offer unique entertainment proposals.' By expanding its development capabilities, Nintendo aims to deliver innovative and unique gaming experiences to its consumers, meeting the evolving demands of the gaming industry.
