Bandai Namco Achieves Record Sales and Increased Profits Despite Decline in Video Game Sector
Bandai Namco has unveiled its comprehensive financial results for the year, showcasing a robust performance across its business operations, despite experiencing a downturn in its video games segment. The Japanese publisher reported an all-time high in net sales, reaching ¥1.05 trillion ($6.74 billion), and witnessed a significant 12% rise in full-year profits, amounting to ¥101.4 billion ($651.4 million). Although the Digital segment, responsible for the company's video game operations, encountered a decline in both sales and profits compared to the previous year, its results exceeded initial forecasts. Notably, the segment's profit surpassed expectations by ¥5.2 billion ($33.4 million). The company anticipates a stronger showing from its video games business in the upcoming year. Key financial highlights include: net sales of ¥1.05 trillion ($6.74 billion), representing a 6% increase; operating profit of ¥90.6 billion ($582 million), marking a 22% decline; and net profit of ¥101.4 billion ($651.4 million), indicating a 12.3% increase. Within the Digital segment, net sales reached ¥372.6 billion ($2.39 billion), down 3.4%, while profit stood at ¥6.2 billion ($39.8 million), representing an 87% decrease. The company attributed 'favourable sales' to its prominent home console releases, including Armored Core 6 and Tekken 8, as well as robust performance from its mobile applications. However, its PC online games failed to meet their targets. Bandai Namco also reported a valuation loss and disposal loss during the fiscal year, resulting from a reevaluation of its title lineup in the Digital segment. This move is part of the company's ongoing Mid-Term Plan aimed at enhancing operating profitability. Looking ahead, the publisher has high expectations for the Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, scheduled for release on June 21, and has hinted at the launch of 'several new titles' in the second half of the year, which is expected to bolster its performance in the new fiscal year. The Toys & Hobby segment was a significant contributor to the company's growth, driven by sales of Gundam figures and new trading card games for popular franchises such as One Piece and Dragon Ball. Despite experiencing declines in certain segments and operating profit, Bandai Namco surpassed its forecasts for total net sales, operating profit, and net profit. The company is poised for overall growth in the upcoming year, although it anticipates a 20% drop in profits. However, its Digital segment is expected to witness a substantial 384% increase in profits year-on-year.
