Wayfinder Undergoes Significant Transformation from Free-to-Play to Premium Single-Player Experience

In a significant overhaul, Wayfinder is transitioning from an online-only multiplayer game with free-to-play mechanics to a premium single-player experience, accompanied by optional three-player co-op, after losing its publisher. This change comes with the upcoming Echoes update, which will remove all online requirements, ensuring the game's longevity. The studio, Airship Syndicate, will eliminate microtransactions and in-game purchases, opting for a one-time purchase model at $24.99 during Early Access, with a planned price increase upon full release. The decision, described as necessary to guarantee the game's perpetual availability, follows the game's original publisher, Digital Extremes, dropping the title when it closed its publishing division. The move led to significant restructuring within Airship Syndicate but has not deterred the studio from continuing Wayfinder's development. The Echoes update is set to release on May 31st for current players, with Wayfinder becoming available for purchase on Steam via Early Access on June 11th. A full launch is anticipated by the end of the year. However, player data and progress will not be retained post-update. Airship Syndicate aims to introduce these changes to the PlayStation 5 version later in the year, discontinuing the PlayStation 4 version but offering a free upgrade to the PS5 edition for all players. An Xbox Series X|S version is also planned for Early Access, with details to be shared later. The studio reflects on the challenging journey, acknowledging the pivot from the original vision but expressing commitment to supporting Wayfinder for years to come, with plans for additional content and characters based on player demand.
