GameStop Stock Surges Following Meme Icon's Social Media Return
A significant spike in GameStop shares has been observed this week, prompted by the return of Keith Gill, famously known as Roaring Kitty, to social media. His first post in almost three years appeared on Twitter/X on Sunday night, featuring an image of a person holding a controller in a relaxed position, followed by eleven additional posts that compiled edited clips from various movies, shows, songs, and music videos. Although these clips hinted at themes of resurgence and action, they did not convey a clear message about Gill's intentions or any specific connection to GameStop. GameStop's stock closed at $17.46 on Friday and opened at $26.34 on Monday, marking a 51% increase. It peaked at $38.20 on Monday before partially retreating, and opened at $64.83 in the next trading session, a valuation last seen in June 2021, considering the 4:1 stock split in 2022. Gill, also known as DeepF***ingValue on Reddit's r/wallstreetbets, played a pivotal role in the 2021 GameStop meme stock rally. As of the latest update, GameStop shares are trading at nearly eight times their average volume, with a decline from the opening but still significantly above the previous level at $54. Notably, GameStop underwent layoffs in March following the release of its fiscal year-end results, which reported an 11% decline in sales to $5.27 billion but managed a net profit of $6.7 million, a substantial improvement over the $313 million loss in the preceding year.
