Xbox Community Issues Over 27 Million Reports in Second Half of 2023

Microsoft has published its fourth Xbox Transparency Report, shedding light on the company's efforts to tackle harassment, toxic behavior, and problematic content on its gaming platform. The report covers the six-month period ending December 31, 2023, during which Xbox users submitted a staggering 27.44 million reports. These reports can be broken down into three main categories: 12.74 million (47%) related to interactions with other players, 11.34 million (41%) concerning unsportsmanlike conduct such as cheating, and 3.36 million (12%) related to user-generated content like gamertags and uploaded screenshots. In response to these reports, 10.31 million enforcement actions were taken against offending players, often resulting in the removal of offending content and temporary or permanent suspension of accounts. The report highlights Xbox's two-pronged approach to moderation, comprising proactive measures that utilize technology to identify and address issues before they are reported, and reactive measures that rely on user reports to address guideline violations. Notably, cheating and fake accounts were the primary focus of proactive moderation, with 7.32 million enforcement actions taken. The company emphasizes the importance of addressing problematic conduct and content before they are reported, in order to maintain a healthy and competitive gaming environment. Furthermore, the Xbox voice reporting feature has collected 138,000 recordings since its introduction, with 98% of users who received a warning exhibiting improved behavior and avoiding further enforcement. Additionally, Xbox reported 674 cases to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and made 2,076 referrals to the Crisis Text Line. Out of 179,000 account suspension appeals, only 7% were successful.
