YouTube Leads as the Most Popular and Trusted Game Discovery Platform
Recent research indicates that YouTube is the go-to platform for gamers to discover new titles, with 64% of surveyed players relying on it for game discovery. The study, conducted by PR and marketing agency Big Games Machine, polled 1,000 US-based console and PC gamers on their methods for finding new games. Following YouTube, TikTok emerged as the second most utilized platform at 36%, trailed by Instagram, Facebook, and word of mouth. Notably, younger gamers exhibited a stronger preference for mobile-first social media platforms, such as TikTok, which was used by 58% of 18 to 24-year-olds compared to 29% of 34 to 44-year-olds. In contrast, the least popular sources included Metacritic's professional reviews, user reviews, and print magazines, with only 3%, 4%, and 5% of respondents relying on them, respectively. On average, gamers used between four and five different channels to learn about new games. YouTube was not only the most popular but also the most trusted platform, with 52% of respondents citing it as their trusted source. Conversely, online ads and Twitter were deemed the least trustworthy, with 17% and 19% of respondents expressing distrust, respectively. The study also explored the factors influencing gamers' decisions to purchase or play new games, with 40% citing familiarity with a franchise as the primary motivator. Additionally, 30% of respondents were drawn to games included in subscription plans, while positive user reviews and influencer or celebrity endorsements also played significant roles, with 30% and 25% of respondents citing these factors, respectively. According to Big Games Machine co-founder James Kaye, 'Established franchises and subscription platforms are key drivers of game discoverability, but many developers lack these advantages, necessitating alternative strategies to raise awareness about their titles.' Kaye emphasized the importance of a multifaceted approach, stating, 'A single marketing strategy is insufficient; instead, developers should adopt a blended approach that leverages multiple channels, particularly social media, to achieve optimal outcomes.'
