IGDA Urges Game Developers to Adopt Sustainable Practices

The International Game Developers Association has issued a statement calling on studio leaders to take proactive measures to minimize unnecessary layoffs. With over 8,700 game developers affected by layoffs this year, the association emphasizes the severe impact on the industry and the need for immediate action. The group expresses concern that the lack of career stability may drive talented individuals, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to seek opportunities outside the gaming industry, resulting in skill gaps and decreased diversity. To address this issue, the IGDA recommends that studios follow six key principles: ● Develop and maintain accurate short-term and long-term forecasts to anticipate and prepare for periods of growth and decline ● Limit headcount reductions to preserve team morale and minimize the costs associated with rehiring and retraining staff ● Mitigate risk by diversifying projects and utilizing talent across multiple projects in various stages of development ● Foster open communication with teams, addressing concerns about well-being and job security ● Implement and support diversity initiatives to retain the diverse talent acquired by the industry over the past decade ● Provide comprehensive support to departing employees, ensuring their well-being and future success. The IGDA also shared a list of industry resources available to support laid-off employees, including those offered by the association itself and other organizations.
