Nintendo Implements Staffing Reductions Among US Quality Assurance Contractors

Nintendo of America is restructuring its quality assurance operations, with reports from Kotaku indicating a substantial reduction in contractor numbers at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. A company spokesperson acknowledged the termination of several contractor assignments but noted that the overhaul also led to the creation of a significant number of full-time positions. Although contractors are formally employed by an external agency, those affected by the layoffs will receive severance packages. Nintendo cited the goal of enhancing global integration in game development as the rationale behind this move, aiming to align its US operations more closely with international testing procedures. Estimates from former and current contractors suggest that over 100 individuals may be impacted by the reorganization. A possible factor contributing to this decision is the slowing pace of first-party game releases for the Switch, with some contractors reporting a decrease in workload and none aware of ongoing testing for the Switch's successor, which is reportedly delayed until 2025. The treatment of Nintendo's US QA contractors has been under scrutiny since 2022, following formal complaints to the National Labor Relations Board and investigative reports by Kotaku and IGN.
