Popularium Raises $2 Million in Seed Funding for Debut Game by Renowned Game Designer Richard Garfield
Popularium, a gaming startup founded by Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield, former Hearthstone and World of Warcraft developer Jon Bankard, and ex-Xbox Live manager Arka Ray, has successfully secured $2 million in seed funding. The investment will be utilized to develop, market, and launch the public alpha of their debut title, Chaos Agents, slated for release in the summer. Chaos Agents is an innovative 'autobattler royale' game that combines the 'last person standing' concept with auto-battling gameplay, allowing players to train and pit their unique superheroes against dozens of other players. With a planned release in 2025, the game promises to deliver a fresh and engaging experience. The seed funding round saw participation from notable investors, including Palm Drive Capital, The Data Economics Company, and Eden Chen via the A16Z Scout Fund, among others. Nearly half of the funding came from investors who are fans of Magic and other games developed by Popularium's founders. According to Ray, Chaos Agents is just the beginning of Popularium's long-term vision to create games that push the boundaries of innovation in game design and economics while providing engaging experiences for gamers. The studio is committed to developing games that are fun, community-driven, and rewarding, without the use of blockchain technology. Popularium's goal is to create a series of games, along with a custom-built cloud gaming engine, that can be played from any device, with Chaos Agents being the first title in this series.
