US Government Takes Apple to Court Over Antitrust Concerns and Cloud Gaming Restrictions
The US Department of Justice has initiated a civil antitrust lawsuit against Apple, alleging the company's engagement in monopolistic practices and violation of antitrust laws in the smartphone market. The lawsuit, filed in the US District of New Jersey, claims that Apple has imposed unfair restrictions on developers, with its stance on cloud gaming being a significant factor. According to the lawsuit, Apple's policies have hindered the development of cloud-streaming apps and services, forcing consumers to rely on expensive smartphone hardware to access high-quality video games and other cloud-based applications. The lawsuit argues that Apple's requirement for developers to submit updates for cloud games and services as separate apps for approval increases costs and limits the availability of games for users. As a result, developers are compelled to create separate iOS versions of their services rather than a single, cross-platform cloud-based version. In response, Apple stated that the lawsuit undermines the principles that differentiate its products in competitive markets and would impede its ability to create innovative technology. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority is also investigating Apple for anti-competitive practices related to cloud gaming. Previously, Apple had blocked Xbox Cloud Gaming and Google's Stadia service on iOS but has since lifted these restrictions.
