France Achieves Record-Breaking €6.1 Billion in Gaming Revenue for 2023

France's video game market reached an unprecedented high, generating €6.1 billion in consumer spending on games products in 2023, according to a recent report by the French games trade body SELL. The console segment accounted for 52% of the market's total value, exceeding €3 billion and experiencing a 24.1% year-over-year increase. The resolution of supply chain issues for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles significantly contributed to this growth, with hardware sales rising 16% year-over-year to €1.7 billion. When combined with accessory sales, which saw 6.6 million products sold, hardware spending increased by 17% to €2.3 billion. Mobile gaming accounted for €1.5 billion, representing 24% of the market, while PC gaming generated €1.4 billion, also holding a 24% share. The total market value experienced a 10% increase compared to 2022 and was 9% higher than in 2020. SELL Chairman James Rebours attributed France's growth to the country's robust retail landscape, which includes a diverse range of brick-and-mortar stores committed to the video game industry. However, Rebours warned that the market is likely to 'normalize' in 2024, following an exceptional year driven by console sales, hardware, accessories, and a strong lineup of titles. He noted that the market's peak of €6.1 billion in 2023 was also driven by the mobile ecosystem and an exceptional mix of categories that have increased.
