Xbox Introduces New Resource to Foster Inclusivity in Game Development

Microsoft's Xbox division has unveiled the 'Gaming For Everyone Product Inclusion Framework', a comprehensive resource designed to help developers create more inclusive games. The framework, which was initially introduced internally in 2019, focuses on four primary areas: globalization, accessibility, representation, and approachability. According to Katy Jo Wright, Xbox's head of Gaming for Everyone & Sustainability, the framework is not a mandate, but rather a guide to help developers make informed decisions about their games. The resource is now available to other studios, with the goal of promoting intentional inclusion in game development. Wright emphasizes that the framework is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather a flexible tool that can be applied to various aspects of the gaming experience, from development to marketing. The framework's launch comes at a time when some gamers are pushing back against diversity initiatives in games. However, Wright believes that the majority of players value diversity and inclusivity, citing a survey that found 71% of players consider diversity in stories and characters to be 'very' or 'extremely important'. Xbox's framework provides examples of how the company has approached inclusivity in its own games and services, including the Xbox Adaptive Controller, Game Pass, and ID@Xbox titles like Venba. The company is committed to updating the resource hub and engaging with developers through a Discord channel to share learnings and best practices. Ultimately, the goal of the framework is to encourage intentional inclusion in game development, recognizing that unintentional exclusion can occur when developers are not mindful of their decisions.
