UK Sees 22% Rise in Gaming Start-Ups During 2023

The number of gaming companies in the UK experienced a significant 22% increase in 2023, as reported by RSM UK. According to the analytics firm's findings, the sector expanded from 2,008 to 2,450 companies last year, largely due to the surge in layoffs within the industry. This trend led to the establishment of new gaming firms. Notably, East England witnessed the highest growth rate among UK regions, with an 80% increase in new gaming studios. The west region followed with a 32% rise in company growth, while London saw a 30% expansion. Richard Heap of RSM UK commented, 'The continued growth in the gaming industry, despite facing numerous challenges, is a positive sign. However, it is undeniable that layoffs were prevalent throughout last year and continued into the start of this year.' Heap further noted, 'Layoffs, although often viewed as detrimental to the gaming industry, can actually drive growth as affected individuals may be motivated to start their own businesses. Given the staff reductions at the beginning of this year, the UK gaming sector may be poised for another increase in start-ups.'
