The Revival of 1ReasonToBe: Why It Matters Now More Than Ever at GDC 2024

The highly anticipated panel, 1ReasonToBe, is set to return to GDC 2024, marking its first in-person appearance since 2019. Hosted by Laia Bee, CEO of Pincer Games and president of the Uruguayan Game Developers Association, the panel will feature five women from diverse backgrounds sharing their personal stories and experiences in the gaming industry. The return of 1ReasonToBe comes at a time when the industry is facing numerous challenges, including online harassment, fascist political parties, and economic crises. Bee emphasizes the importance of reclaiming spaces and providing a platform for underrepresented voices to be heard. The panel's history dates back to 2013 when it was created by Brenda Romero and Leigh Alexander as a way to champion and advocate for women in games. Over the years, it has evolved to feature people from marginalized backgrounds, with Rami Ismail taking the helm in 2016 and introducing a geographically diverse approach. Bee, who was initially set to host the panel in 2020, has been a long-time advocate for diversity and representation in the industry. She has been involved in various volunteer work, including helping to create sponsorship opportunities for Latin American game developers. This year's panelists include Aevee Bee, Indrani Ganguly, Alexandra Marzuqa Giacaman, Bahiyya Khan, and Isabel Vásquez, each with their unique stories and experiences. Bee highlights the importance of having a diverse range of panelists, including trans representation and developers from underrepresented regions. The panel aims to inspire and motivate developers, particularly those facing challenges and adversity. Bee hopes that attendees will take away a sense of positivity and inspiration, recognizing that despite limited resources, developers can still create meaningful and impactful work. The return of 1ReasonToBe is a testament to the industry's need for diversity, representation, and inclusion. As Bee emphasizes, it is crucial to provide a platform for underrepresented voices to be heard and to create opportunities for developers from all walks of life to share their stories and experiences.
