US Federal Agencies Crack Down on Online Extremism in Social Media and Gaming
US federal agencies are taking steps to eliminate extremist content from online gaming communities. According to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) study, which involved interviews with representatives from Roblox, Discord, Reddit, and other major social media and gaming companies, domestic extremists are leveraging these platforms to spread their ideologies and recruit new members. The study, conducted between September 2022 and January 2024, was commissioned by the House of Homeland Security Committee. Its key findings indicate that extremists use social media and gaming platforms to disseminate their views, connect with like-minded individuals, and inspire others to adopt violent ideologies. Experts and agency officials have noted that online content promoting domestic violent extremism has played a role in several high-profile attacks in recent years. In response, some social media and gaming companies, as well as federal agencies, are working to better understand and address this issue. The GAO report recommends that the FBI and DHS develop strategies for sharing information with social media and gaming companies to help curb domestic violent extremism. This development comes amid ongoing efforts by lawmakers to address the rise of extremism in online gaming. Earlier this year, a US congresswoman expressed disappointment with the gaming industry's response to the issue, while a survey conducted by New York University found that over half of its respondents had encountered extremist ideologies online.
