New Event Safety Guidelines Released by Take This and Safe In Our World

Take This and Safe In Our World have introduced a new set of event safety guidelines, aiming to equip organizers with the necessary resources to create safe and inclusive environments. The guidelines, outlined in the Event Safety Standards Guide, are divided into four key areas: planning, policy, training, and tools. The planning section delves into the event's purpose, target audience, and their needs. It also explores factors such as alcohol service and considerations for attendees from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and people with mental health conditions. According to Take This executive director Eve Crevoshay, this section examines various factors that could impact attendees from different religious backgrounds, minority genders, and other demographics. The policy segment focuses on internal practices, codes of conduct, and addressing safety concerns. The training and tools sections provide guidance on enforcing event safety and offer support before, during, and after the event. These sections can be used individually or together, allowing organizers to tailor their approach to specific events. As noted by Safe In Our World content and community manager Rosie Taylor, implementing even a few elements from the guide can significantly enhance event safety and accessibility. The guide also includes safety standards for event staff, emphasizing the importance of management's role in setting expectations and boundaries. Safe In Our World partnerships and training manager Sky Tunley-Stainton highlighted that event safety guidance often focuses on individual actions, but it is crucial for those in management positions to establish clear work expectations and boundaries, particularly in large events where the lines between work and social activities can become blurred.
