Over 600 Activision QA Staff Join Union Ranks
In a significant development, a substantial group of Activision QA workers has opted to unionize. The Communication Workers of America has announced that Microsoft has chosen to voluntarily recognize a union for workers at Activision Central Quality Assurance, marking a notable milestone. This move will see approximately 600 employees across California, Texas, and Minnesota being represented by the union, thereby making it the largest contingent of union-represented workers within any US gaming company. With this addition, the CWA now represents over 1,000 Microsoft employees, including those from previous unionizations at Zenimax QA, Blizzard Albany, and Raven Software. According to CWA President Claude Cummings Jr., "Microsoft is upholding its pledge to allow workers to decide for themselves whether they wish to unionize." He further emphasized that while other major industry players often seek to undermine employee unionization efforts, Microsoft's stance will serve to bolster its corporate culture and customer service capabilities, setting a precedent for the industry. Kara Fannon, a QA tester and union member, highlighted the workers' desire for improved compensation and enhanced career opportunities, stating, "Although Quality Assurance roles are perceived as an entry point into the video game industry, the reality is that we often only get access to internal job postings before they are made public." Fannon expressed the workers' readiness to advance their careers and their belief that a robust union contract will pave the way for mutual success between workers and the company.
