UK Video Game Sales: Physical Copies Account for 38% of Top 20 Titles
According to a recent chart released by the Entertainment and Retail Association, the top 20 best-selling games in the UK have been analyzed to reveal their digital and physical sales splits. The data, compiled from GSD and GfK figures, highlights the persistence of physical game sales in the UK market. The top-selling game in the UK, EA Sports FC 24, sold 2.395 million units in 2023, with 67.2% of sales (1.61 million) originating from digital platforms such as PlayStation Network, Steam, Xbox Live, and Nintendo eShop, while 32.8% (786,000) came from physical retailers like Amazon, GAME, and Tesco. Similarly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 saw 69% of its 1.24 million sales come from digital stores. However, Hogwarts Legacy had a more significant physical presence, with 56% of its 1.92 million sales coming from digital platforms. Notably, Spider-Man 2 had a higher proportion of physical sales, with over 53% of its sales coming from physical stores. Excluding Nintendo games, which are only tracked physically due to the company's reluctance to share digital data, 38% of the top 20 games were sold through physical retailers.
