Cloud Imperium Announces Restructuring and Redundancies

Initial report, February 28, 2024: Cloud Imperium Games, the studio behind Star Citizen, has undergone a round of layoffs, with an unspecified number of employees losing their jobs. According to Game Developer, several former staff members, including level designer Dane Kubicka, Austin QA lead Vincent Sinatra, and Austin senior QA analyst Andrew Rexroth, have shared their experiences of being let go on LinkedIn. Additionally, Star Citizen's game director, Todd Papy, has parted ways with the company, as indicated on his LinkedIn profile. Former producer Annie Bouffard expressed her dissatisfaction with the company, stating that she resigned from a "highly toxic work environment" after being disregarded when expressing concerns about potential layoffs. Bouffard alleged that Cloud Imperium carried out mass layoffs at the end of January, disguising them as a relocation to another office. Furthermore, she claimed that her supervisor had not communicated with her since November and that her annual evaluation was unprofessional. GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Cloud Imperium for a statement and clarification. The company expanded with a new Manchester studio in 2022. Update, February 29, 2024: Cloud Imperium has provided GamesIndustry.biz with a statement explaining the situation. "As part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our operations, we periodically assess our structure to ensure we are working efficiently, which may involve reorganizing certain roles to be closer to the teams they support," the statement read. "Now that our teams are back in the office and we've seen the benefits of in-person collaboration, we've decided to consolidate development as much as possible, resulting in some minor adjustments to our staffing. As a consequence of this restructuring, a limited number of positions were eliminated, and we continue to recruit for key positions within the company."
