EU Web Apps No Longer Supported by Apple

In compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple has halted the distribution of Progressive Web Apps within the EU. The company updated its Developer site support page, stating that the decision was driven by the complex security and privacy concerns linked to web apps utilizing alternative browser engines beyond Apple's WebKit. Implementing the necessary changes would have required creating a new integration architecture, which was deemed impractical given the existing demands of the DMA and the low adoption rate of Home Screen web apps. As a result, users can still access websites directly from their home screens via bookmarks. Apple expressed regret over the potential impact on developers and users, attributing the change to its efforts to comply with the DMA. This development follows the introduction of new terms for European developers, which include a 17% commission fee on transactions for digital goods and services.
