Starbreeze Returns to Profitability with Payday 3, Despite Lower-Than-Expected Sales

Starbreeze has announced its full-year financial results, marking the company's first pre-tax profit since its financial struggles in 2018. The release of Payday 3 in September was a key factor in this turnaround, although CEO Tobias Sjögren noted that the game's sales and player activity are currently lower than anticipated. Key financial highlights include a 106% year-on-year increase in Q4 net sales to SEK 69.2 million ($6.6 million) and a full-year profit before taxes of SEK 207.7 million ($19.9 million). Despite initial technical issues and lower-than-expected sales, Sjögren remains confident that Payday 3 can achieve long-term success through ongoing support and improvements, including the addition of single-player and offline modes. The company is also focused on diversifying its portfolio through a mix of owned and licensed IP, as well as publishing games from other studios, including a forthcoming Dungeons & Dragons title.
