Sony Explores Expansion of First-Party Games to Multiple Platforms
In a bid to stimulate growth in its gaming sector, Sony is considering the release of its exclusive first-party titles on platforms beyond its own, including PC. This strategy, as outlined by Sony's President and COO Hiroki Totoki during a recent earnings call, is expected to enhance the company's operating income, which has seen a 15% decline to ¥979.4 billion ($6.5 billion). Totoki emphasized that the primary goal of first-party titles was initially to drive console sales, but now, the company recognizes the potential synergy in making these titles available on multiple platforms, including computers, to improve profitability. Since 2020, PlayStation has begun porting some of its flagship first-party games to PC, such as the Spider-Man, Horizon, and God of War series, with the recent announcement of a PC and PS5 remaster of the horror title Until Dawn. The move is part of Sony's effort to increase PlayStation's profit margin, which Totoki admitted is not currently in an ideal state due to the decreased profitability of the PS5 following recent price promotions. This development comes as the industry awaits Xbox's update on its first-party content release plans, expected later in the day, amidst rumors of potential releases on competing platforms, including the PS5.
