PlayStation Revenue Reaches $9.6 Billion in Holiday Quarter, Despite Expected Hardware Decline
Sony has unveiled its latest financial results, showcasing a significant surge in sales across the entire company and its PlayStation division. However, the company has adjusted its sales forecasts downward for PlayStation, citing an anticipated decline in hardware sales, partly due to the lack of major game releases from its prominent franchises in the upcoming fiscal year. Key highlights for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2023, include: Sales of ¥9.54 trillion ($63.3 billion), representing a 20% year-on-year increase, and operating income of ¥979.4 billion ($6.5 billion), down 15% year-on-year. The Game & Network Services segment saw sales of ¥3.2 trillion ($21.2 billion), up 23%, and operating income of ¥184.2 billion ($1.2 billion), down 12%. In the quarter ending December 31, 2023, Sony shipped 8.2 million PlayStation 5 units, exceeding the 7.1 million units shipped in the same quarter the previous year. This brings the total units shipped since the fiscal year began to 16.4 million, with 22.7 million PS5s shipped in 2023. Monthly active users on the PlayStation Network reached 123 million, up from 112 million, and 89.7 million full games were sold, including 16.2 million first-party titles. Notably, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 shipped 10 million units after 107 days on the market. However, according to Sony President Hiroki Totoki, there will be no new releases from established franchises until at least April 2025, as the company focuses on producing high-quality games and live service titles. This, combined with the PS5 entering the latter half of its console cycle, has led Sony to forecast a decline in hardware sales for the next fiscal year. The company has also revised its forecasts for the current financial year, expecting Game & Network Services sales of ¥4.15 trillion ($27.5 billion), a 6% decrease from the previous guidance, but still a 14% improvement over the last fiscal year. Overall, Sony enjoyed a strong holiday quarter, with Game & Network Services sales up 16% year-on-year to ¥1.44 trillion ($9.6 billion), driven by a 23% increase in digital game and add-on content sales, a 12% rise in network services revenues, and a 13.5% increase in hardware sales.
