UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out a new educational offering called the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a business‑focused programme aimed at uplifting independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. The Academy is structured to give fledgling developers a comprehensive toolkit for shaping effective market‑entry strategies, building vibrant communities, and establishing a sustainable presence in an increasingly competitive industry.

At its core, the Academy seeks to fill a common gap in the indie development pipeline: while many small studios possess strong creative visions and solid game concepts, they often lack the time, resources, or expertise to translate those ideas into a successful launch and an engaged player base. By delivering a series of targeted learning modules, the Academy equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to bridge that divide. The curriculum is delivered entirely online and is divided into six distinct modules. Each module tackles a critical component of the go‑to‑market process.

The first module introduces diagnostic tools and data‑driven insights, helping studios assess their current position, identify strengths, and pinpoint areas for improvement. The second module moves into the creation of a cohesive marketing strategy, covering everything from brand positioning to budget allocation. The third module focuses on the execution of marketing campaigns, teaching participants how to plan, launch, and measure the impact of promotional activities across multiple channels. A unique element of the Academy is its emphasis on community engagement through Discord, the leading platform for real‑time interaction among gamers.

In the fourth module, studios learn how to set up and manage Discord servers, foster meaningful conversations, and turn casual fans into loyal advocates. The fifth module delves into studio branding, guiding developers on how to craft a consistent visual and narrative identity that resonates with their target audience. Throughout the programme, industry veterans and guest speakers share real‑world case studies, offering practical advice and answering questions from participants. The Academy is limited to a small cohort of ten to twelve studios, ensuring each team receives personalized attention and ample opportunities for networking.

The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, held within the larger MCM Comic Con event in London next month. This opening session provides a chance for participants to meet one another, hear from keynote speakers, and begin collaborative work on a shared case study that will run through the duration of the Academy. Following the launch event, the bulk of the training takes place online during November and early December.

Weekly live sessions, interactive workshops, and peer‑review activities keep the momentum going, while mentors from UKIE, Discord, and GameFlex provide feedback on each studio’s progress. The final phase culminates in another face‑to‑face event, where each participating studio presents a polished go‑to‑market plan that they have refined throughout the course. These presentations are evaluated by a panel of experts, and the best‑prepared teams receive additional exposure and potential support for their upcoming releases. Applications are now open, and interested studios can submit their proposals through the dedicated application portal.

The deadline for submissions is September 30, 2026, after which a selection committee will review entries based on criteria such as development stage, market potential, and commitment to community building. "Go‑to‑market planning is where many promising games stumble," explains Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE.

"It isn’t a lack of great ideas that holds them back, but rather insufficient time and guidance to cultivate the audience and community that can bring those ideas to life. The Go‑To‑Market Academy offers indie studios a dedicated space to work through these challenges, with direct input from Discord—a platform that has become central to how gaming communities form and evolve." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, adds, "The UK indie scene is brimming with talent and opportunity. We’re thrilled to partner with UKIE to help this ecosystem thrive.

By teaching developers how to leverage Discord’s tools, we aim to empower them to connect with an engaged gaming audience, nurture strong communities, and ultimately grow their games." Beyond the core curriculum, the Academy also provides access to a network of mentors, potential investors, and media contacts. Studios can tap into these resources to secure additional funding, gain press coverage, and explore distribution partnerships.

The programme’s emphasis on real‑world application means that participants leave not only with a theoretical framework but also with a concrete, actionable plan ready for implementation. In summary, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a collaborative effort to strengthen the UK indie game sector by addressing the strategic and community‑building challenges that many small studios face.

By combining expert instruction, hands‑on Discord training, and a supportive peer environment, the Academy aims to turn creative concepts into successful, market‑ready products that resonate with players worldwide.
