Yoko Shimomura and Fawzi Mesmar to Receive Top Honors at GDC Awards

The organizers of the Game Developers Choice Awards have unveiled the winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Ambassador Award for this year. Yoko Shimomura will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Fawzi Mesmar will receive the Ambassador Award. Shimomura's illustrious career, which began in 1988, has been marked by her work as a composer at Capcom, where she created music for iconic games such as Street Fighter II, Final Fight, and The King of Dragons. She later joined Square Soft (now Square Enix) in 1993 and went on to compose soundtracks for the Kingdom Hearts series, the Final Fantasy franchise, and other notable titles like Parasite Eve. Her recent music credits include Super Mario RPG and Live A Live. On the other hand, Fawzi Mesmar has had a distinguished career spanning over two decades, with stints at prominent AAA studios, including Gameloft, where he served as a principal game designer. He has also held key positions at King, EA's DICE division, and Ubisoft, where he is currently the vice president of global creative. His notable game credits include Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Battlefield 2042, and the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws. According to Informa Tech event director Stephenie Hawkins, 'We are thrilled to recognize Yoko Shimomura and Fawzi Mesmar for their outstanding contributions to the gaming industry, which have inspired countless aspiring composers and designers worldwide.' The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 20, during the Game Developers Conference, in conjunction with the Independent Game Festival awards at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
