Investment in Women-Led Businesses Lags Behind
According to a recent report, women-led game studios received a mere $1.2 million in funding in 2021, whereas their male-founded counterparts amassed a staggering $4.1 billion. The data, compiled by research firm PitchBook, highlights a glaring disparity in investment support for marginalized developers. On average, women-led studios secured just $240,000 in venture capital, while men-led firms received an average of $18.4 million. Industry experts, including Eliana Oikawa, CEO of Wings Interactive, point to a massive funding gap, with projects led by women and other underrepresented groups being severely underfunded. The report also features personal accounts from developers, including Dani Lalonders and Chella Ramanan, who shared their struggles in securing funding. Furthermore, the report notes that publishers often prioritize male demographics when considering target audiences for games, exacerbating the existing disparities.
