Disney Pours $1.5 Billion into Epic Games, Unveils Groundbreaking Fortnite Collaboration
In a significant move, The Walt Disney Company has made a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, securing an equity stake, and has announced a major partnership with Fortnite. Epic Games' CEO, Tim Sweeney, will retain control of the company's board following the transaction. The collaboration between Disney and Epic Games is described as an 'open, persistent, social universe', blending gaming with the ability for fans to engage with, watch, and shop content from Disney's vast portfolio, including brands like Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and Avatar. According to Disney CEO Robert A. Iger, this new relationship with Epic Games will merge Disney's iconic brands with Fortnite's massive popularity, creating a revolutionary gaming and entertainment universe. Iger also noted that this marks Disney's most substantial foray into the gaming world, offering considerable growth opportunities. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, added that this partnership will enable the company to bring its vast collection of stories and experiences to a broad audience in innovative ways, leveraging Epic Games' cutting-edge technology and Fortnite's open ecosystem. The two companies have previously collaborated on several projects, including branded partnerships within Fortnite and utilizing Epic's Unreal Engine for content creation in games, films, and theme parks. This new partnership follows Epic's recent expansion of Fortnite, which included the launch of LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, and Rocket Racing. Tim Sweeney expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that Disney was one of the first companies to recognize the potential of merging their worlds with Epic's in Fortnite, and now they are working together to build a new, interconnected ecosystem that will unite the Disney and Fortnite communities.
