Renowned Game Industry Figure Laralyn McWilliams Passes Away

Laralyn McWilliams, a veteran game designer and creative director, has passed away at the age of 58 due to complications from heart surgery. Her gaming career, which began in 1994, was marked by her work as a lead designer at several studios, including Media Station, High Voltage Software, and Pandemic Studios. McWilliams also held the position of creative director for the MMO Free Realms at Sony Online Entertainment from 2006 to 2011. Additionally, she served as chief creative officer at Skydance Interactive for five years. In 2018, she joined Microsoft, where she last held the position of principal creative design director. Throughout her career, McWilliams worked on notable games such as Gears of War 4, Full Spectrum Warrior, and Archangel. In 2021, she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Game Developer's Choice Awards. McWilliams is remembered by her peers, including Kari Toyama, who praised her as a fiercely talented game developer and a kind, genuine person who will be deeply missed.
