Study Reveals 95% of Game Studios Are Developing or Releasing Live Service Games

According to a recent report by Griffin Gaming Partners, in collaboration with Rendered VC, a staggering 95% of game developers are either currently working on or planning to release a live service game. The 2023 Game Development Report surveyed 537 studios worldwide, with 66% of respondents agreeing that live services are crucial for achieving long-term success with a game title. The report defines live services as the regular release of updates for a game. Notably, traditional game development typically spans two to three years, whereas live service production can last over five years. The survey notes that traditional game development involves a linear process with set milestones, whereas live service production is a continuous process of adjusting game parameters and introducing new features to enhance player experience. Furthermore, the report highlights that live service teams are pushing for more rapid content releases, with ideal production schedules ranging from weekly to biweekly for live operations and biweekly to monthly for game content updates, marking a significant shift in the pace of game development.
