Apple Paves the Way for Game Pass Streaming on iOS Devices
In a significant policy shift, Apple has introduced new guidelines that will enable game streaming apps to be made available on iOS devices. This move marks a departure from the company's 2020 decision to block such apps, including Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass and Google's Stadia, due to concerns over its ability to review the vast array of games offered through these services. As a result, services like Xbox Game Pass, Google Stadia, and Nvidia GeForce Now had to be accessed via web browsers rather than native apps. The announcement comes on the heels of the UK Competition and Markets Authority's decision to proceed with an investigation into cloud gaming distribution on mobile devices, which had been put on hold since November 2022. Apple has also expanded its in-app purchase system to include mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and plug-ins, allowing users to subscribe to or purchase content from these services. Addressing its initial concerns, Apple stated that 'apps hosting this content are responsible for ensuring all included software meets Apple's stringent user experience and safety standards.'
