Microsoft Announces Significant Layoffs in Gaming Division

Microsoft has initiated a major restructuring of its gaming division, resulting in the elimination of approximately 1,900 positions. This move was announced by Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, in a company-wide memo. The decision is part of a broader effort to align the company's gaming strategy with a sustainable cost structure, supporting the growth of its expanding business. Spencer expressed his appreciation for the contributions of the affected employees, acknowledging their role in the success of Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Xbox teams. In a related development, Blizzard Entertainment has canceled the development of a previously announced survival game, with some staff members being reassigned to new projects. Meanwhile, Mike Ybarra has officially announced his departure from Blizzard Entertainment after four years, including two years as president. Ybarra expressed his gratitude to the affected employees and emphasized that the layoffs reflect the company's strategic decisions rather than the quality of work. This round of layoffs follows a similar reduction of 10,000 employees by Microsoft a year ago, which impacted staff at Bethesda Game Studios and 343 Industries. The news comes three months after Activision Blizzard officially joined Microsoft, following a $68.7 billion acquisition deal that overcame regulatory hurdles in the UK, EU, and US. Microsoft is scheduled to report its second-quarter earnings next week, having posted a net income of $22.3 billion in the first quarter, representing a 27% year-over-year increase.
